Synopsis:

The Valencia privileges, granted by the various monarchs of the Kingdom of Aragon, served to directly connect the monarchy to the people, and allowed, especially during the reign of James I, for an effective implementation at all levels, of the administrative mechanisms of the kingdom newly incorporated to the Crown of Aragon.

They were originally written on parchment, but, over time, the need for having some collections available which gathered these privileges and made their consultation easier advised the drafting of the Llibre dels privilegis (Book of privileges), from which we have received several issues. We have chosen the most significant according to two reasons: Firstly, because it is one of the oldest; and second, because for centuries, probably since its drafting, this copy has been preserved at the archives of the kings of the Crown of Aragon. It brings together more than a hundred documents from the reigns of James I, Peter I, Alfonso I and James II of Valencia, concluding in 1302; but King James I The Conqueror stands out over the rest: 75 privileges were copied from him.
