Synopsis:

"I know that the authenticity of the two Epistles of St. Peter, especially the second, has been contested by some critics. The gender Pseudoepigraphy was accepted by the Jews, who were not afraid to make signing by Solomon, Wisdom or the Canticle.

Knowing if Peter wrote, did write, or have been written under his name these texts, the Church remains a free item. The Spirit is the only inspirational author and guarantor.

But because I am free, I can offer my opinion, which is not only an exegete or a philosopher, but a friend of the human heart. They seem pretty easy to imitate the systems, the foibles of an author, not everything is a sign of genius, which can not be imitated without it.

Now, in the first Epistle of St. Peter, I find an accent that seems to correspond to the character of the chief apostle describing in detail the four evangelists, who give in sum four portraits of Peter, as associated with his teacher.

It feels in this first letter the presence of an author who certainly knows the genre of the Epistles of Paul, which mimics the rhythm and the architecture of them, but that is very different from Peter: less great, less systematic, less dazzling, less personal, less dark, but more tender, more human, more pastoral. I find that it evokes the Passion of Jesus in a fresh way, he who has seen yet more closely than Paul.

It will be a joy for all Christians to consider, touch, thanks to this total playing graphic signs closer to the origins, the relics of thought, the the Heart of Saint Peter".

Jean Guitton. Of the French Academy.
