Synopsis: The manufacture of ceramics in the provinces of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia, firstly by artisans and later on an industrial scale, has been one of the most important economic activities in the development of the Valencian Community, particularly in terms of international exports. This manufacture has undergone its own continuous development, from the dawn of history until the present day. The authors take us on a journey through time as they review the earliest techniques employed and then move right through until the present. It includes an archaeological and artistic study of the earliest sites; a complete review of the holdings in museums of the pavements, decorations, and objects manufactured by the Egyptian, Greek and Carthaginian cultures, as well as those produced by the Iberians, Romans and Moors, which all contribute to the surprising history and development of the manufacture of ceramics in the lands around Valencia. Valencian ceramics have been and continue to be held in high regard by all peoples and at all times, right through to today. |
